Mental Health Nurse Funding Freeze- How It Impacts On Your Patients
The government has just frozen the funds for the Mental Health Nurse Incentive Program (MHNIP). This means that the program is at risk of closing which will have devastating and far reaching effects on those we work with, namely some of the most vulnerable people in our society. Mental Health Nurses play a significant role in reducing and managing mental illness in the community. We prevent suicides, reduce hospital admissions while keeping people well and connected in their communities. The MHNIP is a very cost-effective and successful program compared to the alternative of relying on already over-burdened public and private mental health systems. Private mental health is also not an option for many of our clients who are financially challenged. So they will have few options to access good mental health care if our program closes.
